How to Save and Organize Favorites on a School Chromebook

School Chromebooks, Google Classroom, and Canvas generate links faster than the favorites bar can hold them. Here's how to turn a managed Chromebook into a real bookmark organizer — favorites that follow you to any device and stay sorted by class.

How to Save and Organize Favorites on a School Chromebook

If your school runs on Chromebooks, you already know the drill: you sign into a different machine half the time, the IT department controls what's installed, and your Chrome favorites bar is a graveyard of blue icons from three units ago. Google Classroom and Canvas hand you a steady stream of links, and almost none of them end up anywhere you can find later.

Here's how to turn a managed Chromebook into an actual bookmark organizer for school — favorites that follow you to any device and stay sorted by class.

Why the Chrome favorites bar falls short at school

The favorites bar is fine for a few sites you visit daily. It breaks down fast in a school setting:

  • It's tied to a sign-in, not to you. Hop onto a lab Chromebook or a cart device and your carefully built folders may not be there.
  • There's no real organization. Nested folders are the only tool, and they turn into a maze by midterms.
  • Links rot. A worksheet posted in Classroom disappears after the term; a news article slips behind a paywall right before the assignment's due.

A dedicated organizer that lives in your account — not the device — fixes all three.

Step 1: Add the extension (it works on Chromebooks)

onBookmarks runs in the browser, so the browser extension installs on Chrome and ChromeOS like any other. If your school allows extensions, add it once and you get a one-click save and a quick-access side panel on every Chromebook you sign into. If extensions are locked down, you can still save links from the web app directly — nothing to install.

Step 2: Pull in what's already in Classroom and Canvas

You don't have to start from zero. As you work through Google Classroom and Canvas, save the links that matter — assignment pages, posted readings, rubric docs, the video your teacher linked. Each save syncs to your account, so it's waiting on your phone, a home laptop, or tomorrow's Chromebook.

Already exported favorites from Chrome? Import the file and onBookmarks will flag duplicates so you don't inherit the mess.

Step 3: Let AI sort it by class

This is where a Chromebook favorites bar can't compete. onBookmarks' AI tagging reads what you save and suggests the right collection and tags automatically — so a biology reading lands in "Biology" without you stopping to file it. One link can sit in several collections at once, which matters when a source is relevant to two classes.

Step 4: Give each class its own Space

Create a Space per class — "Algebra II", "English", "Chem" — so Period 1 and Period 6 never bleed into the same list. Switch between them in a click, and keep anything personal in its own separate Space.

Step 5: Save the page, not just the link

School links die on a schedule. When a resource matters for an assignment or exam, keep a readable copy of the page so the content survives even after the original disappears from Classroom. For a citation-heavy project, that's the difference between a working bibliography and a scramble the night before.

A favorites setup that follows you

The whole point of moving off the Chromebook favorites bar is that your library stops belonging to a device and starts belonging to you. Sign in anywhere — school Chromebook, home computer, phone — and the same organized set of class resources is right there.

onBookmarks is free with unlimited bookmarks, works on ChromeOS, and reads offline. See the full setup on our bookmark organizer for schools page, or create a free account and bring this semester's links into one place.
